Wrinkle Cream History

Anti-wrinkle creams, depilatories, exfoliants, stretch mark removers, and products to conquer bad breath and body odor, as well as hair extensions, all seem like inventions of the modern world. But they're really not. Every one of these - wrinkle creams included - was first created in ancient Egypt.

Egypt's concern for skin and body care as well as beauty knew no match in ancient times. Archeologists, excavators and other scientists have found palettes for eye makeup and other implements for cosmetic improvements scattered throughout archeological digs, and in graves. Anti-wrinkle creams and other skin care and cosmetic secrets were touted by none other than Cleopatra in her book of beauty secrets. She was known the world over as an expert in beauty and skin care such as wrinkle cream.

There are some anti-aging and beauty secrets from the Egyptians that carry over today. In the United States makers of shampoo products include Egyptian henna. Many products - including anti wrinkle cream - contain aloe, much used in ancient Egypt. Even the Egyptian style of eye makeup emerges periodically on modern faces.

Egyptian fascination with wrinkle creams and other beauty and body care was prevalent no matter what one's class or status on the economic ladder. Records indicate, for example, that even the unskilled lower class workers were given, as part of their wages, such anti wrinkle and moisturizing products as body oil for their daily consumption. Skin care and cosmetics were important to every Egyptian.

These ancient Egyptian anti wrinkle and body care concerns were felt by both genders. In their hot and arid climate, men needed protection for their skin and anti aging wrinkle cream products as well as women.  Men and women both used body oils as well as cosmetic products.

The standard anti wrinkle cream recipe in ancient Egypt include a teaspoon of sweet almond oil, and two drops of frankincense oil. This was gently massaged into the freshly cleansed skin each night. Almonds were very popular for cosmetics such as wrinkle creams in ancient Egypt. While the Egyptians mostly used the oil that they extracted from bitter almonds, the common anti wrinkle variation on this recipe includes sweet almond oil. This is especially true for its aromatherapy use. Its smell is mild and its texture light, so it absorbs quickly into skin.

If you try frankincense for your home made wrinkle cream and you don't like the smell you can add a drop of rose attar. It's expensive but it will cut back on the strong frankincense odor.
